Karwa Chauth 2019: Timings, Date and Rituals of the Festival

Women gather and listen to karwa chauth katha. Married ladies take a glimpse of the moon through a Karwa Chauth Channi or sieve so scrutinize her husband through the sieve. The husbands then feed their wives with some fruits or sweets alongside water to interrupt the day-long strict quick of Karwa Chauth. What is Karva?

Karwa or Karva is a pot filled with milk or water and coins which is used to do Puja during this festival. It is then donated for well being of family, husband and future generation.

Akhand Saubhgyawati Devi Parvati is worshipped at this festival. Women also pray Lord shiva, Ganesh and Kartikeya on this day. Women observe Nirjala Vrat and seek blessings from Lord, the supreme power and worship Lord Moon in the evening and also worship her husband.

Karvachauth Rituals

मम सुखसौभाग्य पुत्रपौत्रादि सुस्थिर श्री प्राप्तये करक चतुर्थी व्रतमहं करिष्ये।”

Meaning: Bless me, my lord, as I am doing this puja and observing fast for well being, wealth and prosperity of my family.

At this festival, women wear mostly new red dresses and getup in the early morning before sunshine. They enjoy the sargi before sunrise. Mother in law gives sargi and mother gives Baya that contains Karva which is very important in puja.

After morning sargi they observe fast for the whole day and break it only after worshipping the moon and catching glimpse of their husband.

In the evening pretty women wear traditional attire and do Solah Sringar with wonderful makeup and jewelry. Mahendi on hands is very creative and important among girls and women at this festival.  They sit together and listen to Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha. In the evening, women wait for moonrise and do puja of the moon.

Nowadays, men show love by observing fast with their better halves and honor them for fasting and praying for their families’ prosperity.
